What Does a Retainer Do?

Retainers are oral appliances that are designed to maintain the achieved alignment of teeth following treatment with traditional braces, clear braces, or Invisalign® treatment. If your child has recently gotten their braces off, a retainer can help prevent the teeth from slowly shifting back towards their improver positions, which is likely to happen as they age. Our orthodontists want to help our patients maintain excellent oral health, appearance, and functionality!

Our practice offers three distinct retainer models:

  • Hawley retainers contain clasps and wires that are securely embedded in an overall shape made of plastic. They’re designed to either cover the roof of the mouth or side of the teeth that the tongue rests on. The clasps will hold onto certain teeth as anchors, while the wire arches over the front surfaces of the teeth in order to hold their position.
  • Clear retainersare crafted from clear plastic and maintain a snug fit over the smile. Clear retainers work in a similar fashion to Hawley retainers, but they’re more discreet and less durable.
  • Fixed retainers (also known as permanent/bonded retainers)are attached to the backside of the patient’s front teeth in an essentially permanent fashion. Only our orthodontists will be capable of removing the appliance.
