Teeth and Gums 101: Thumb Sucking

July 1, 2017

Did you know that a child can damage their teeth by sucking their thumb? Although thumb sucking tends to be a normal habit in children, by no means should it be encouraged, as it can have many negative consequences on their teeth, and even potentially affect the positioning of their teeth as they age.

If your child is sucking their thumb, indicate to them the hazards and risks of doing so, By talking with your child, you can better help them comprehend while the habit should be avoided. Although pacifiers may seem like a great substitute to give your child, in fact, they can have the same negative consequences on teeth that thumb sucking can.

Because children often look at thumb sucking as a security wall for when they are anxious or scared, it can be a difficult task to break. If you continue to struggle with helping them, your child’s pediatrician can place a foul tasting and bitter substance on their thumbs to help discourage the habit. At the latest, a child should stop sucking their thumb around 4 years old, so that their permanent teeth have the best chance of growing in properly.
