How Should You Care for Your Child’s Early Tooth Brushing Needs?

April 18, 2017

How should you care for your child’s early tooth brushing needs? Typically, a child will require assistance with their daily brushing habits until they are around 6 years old. At this time, you should make sure they are brushing safely and effectively with the proper brushing techniques.

The style, shape, contours, and lifespan of a toothbrush for your child is important. The brush should always have soft bristles and be large enough to clean all areas of their teeth. When choosing a toothpaste, make sure it is age appropriate and approved by your dentist. For children under 3, use a rice grain sized dab of toothpaste. For children over 3, use a pea-sized dab of toothpaste.

When storing a child’s toothbrush, make sure it is in an aired-out container and not touching any other toothbrush or utensil, as contamination can occur. Typically, their toothbrush will last 3-4 months before the need to replace it. For additional oral health care needs, be sure to bring your child in for their first examination before they are one year old.
